Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam could be making a return to the T20I squad ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. As per reports, the selectors are considering bringing him back for the tri-nation series, involving Afghanistan and the UAE, and the upcoming Asia Cup with a final call expected soon.
This is because of Fakhar Zaman’s injury which could see him miss the Asia Cup. The southpaw picked up a hamstring injury during the second T20I of the series against the West Indies. He was then ruled out of the third T20I and ODI leg of that tour.
With his fitness under question, Fakhar has now been asked to report to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for rehab. His participation in the Asia Cup 2025 is doubtful and the team management is now exploring options.Â

Babar Azam’s T20I Comeback Depends on ODI Form
Although Babar Azam is being considered, his selection for the Asia Cup will depend on how he performs in the ODIs against the West Indies. He was left out of the T20I setup earlier this year and last played a T20I in December 2024.
Babar was recently seen meeting PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the second T20I of the West Indies series. He was joined by ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan and fast-bowler Naseem Shah during that interaction. This has added to the speculation about his possible return to the T20I team.
The selectors are expected to announce the Asia Cup squad in the second week of August. If Babar delivers with the bat in the ODIs, his name could well be back in the mix for T20Is.
