"He Does Reply” - Jos Buttler on Exchanging Friendly Texts with Shubman Gill

Former England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has revealed he has been in touch with India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Buttler admitted to sending Gill a few congratulatory messages after watching the Indian batter dominate in the ongoing five-match Test series.

Speaking on the YouTube show For The Love Of Cricket alongside former England pacer Stuart Broad, Buttler opened up about his behind-the-scenes camaraderie with Gill. He explained that he felt compelled to acknowledge Gill’s performances, even if it was "begrudgingly."

Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill shared a dressing room earlier this year for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). Gill led the franchise as captain, while Buttler was one of their top performers, racking up 538 runs in 13 innings at an average of 59.78 and a strike-rate of 163.03.

During the conversation with Broad, Buttler revealed that he had sent Gill a couple of texts, congratulating how well he has played. He also shared that Gill as well replied back.

"A couple of times (texted Gill), to sort of begrudgingly saying, 'Well played.' He does reply, which is nice; otherwise, I don't think I'd send him another message," Buttler said as quoted on the YouTube channel 'For The Love Of Cricket.'

Shubman Gill’s Stellar Form in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Gill has undoubtedly been the standout performer in this high-stakes Test series. Taking over the reins of India’s red-ball team, in eight innings so far, Gill has amassed 722 runs at an average of 90.25, making him the leading run-scorer of the series. He has scored four centuries, including a double-hundred.

The final Test will begin at the Kennington Oval in London on July 31. England lead the series 2-1 but given Gill’s red-hot form, the hosts will need a special effort to contain him.
