Punjab Kings openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya walked out to open the batting, with MI sticking to their typical move as Trent Boult started the proceedings with the new ball.
It was a 6-run over to begin the chase, with Prabhsimran Singh getting the first boundary in the second over bowled by Reece Topley, who was playing his first match of the season.
Trent Boult got the first breakthrough, dismissing Prabhsimran with a length delivery. He departed for 6(9) as MI gained early momentum in the chase. Jos Inglis then joined Priyansh Arya, and PBKS began to shift gears during the powerplay.
Jos Inglis Stuns Ahmedabad as He Takes Down Bumrah for 20 runs
As the runs started flowing, Hardik Pandya brought in his go-to man, Jasprit Bumrah. To everyone's surprise at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Jos Inglis smashed Bumrah for a four and a six off his first two balls. Bumrah tried to pull it back with a couple of slower ones, but Inglis wasn’t done he launched another four and six off the last two deliveries, taking Bumrah’s over to 20 runs.
Bumrah had his head in his hands, mirroring the stunned reaction of fans in the stadium, as he conceded his most expensive over of the season. The moment brought back flashbacks of another Aussie taking him down at the same venue two years ago in a big final. Flashbacks, gentlemen!
Meanwhile, Ashwani Kumar struck with his first ball in the next over, dismissing Priyansh Arya. PBKS ended the powerplay at 64/2, with Shreyas Iyer and Jos Inglis at the crease.
Mumbai Indians struck back early in the middle overs. A tight 6-run over from Mitchell Santner was followed by a key wicket, as Hardik Pandya dismissed Inglis. The batter tried to pull, caught an edge, and Jonny Bairstow took a sharp catch as Inglis walked back after a well-made 38(21).

Nehal Wadhera’s Composed Knock Shifts Momentum for PBKS
Nehal Wadhera was the next man in, with MI slightly ahead at that stage. Ironically, it was their former player who turned the tide, playing a composed knock of 48(29) and allowing his captain time to settle and strike later.
The 84-run partnership between Nehal and Shreyas Iyer off 47 balls proved crucial, as MI’s bowlers found no real breakthroughs, barring one costly dropped catch by Trent Boult that gave Shreyas a lifeline and shifted momentum firmly towards Punjab.
PBKS Make History with First 200-Run Chase Against MI
With Shreyas well set, he pulled off a clutch performance. He kept the scoreboard ticking, refusing to back down against MI’s top-class bowling. With 48 needed off the last four overs, Shreyas played out Bumrah smartly and went after the rest. He smashed nearly 8 clean sixes down the ground in his 87(41) runs knok to seal the win for Punjab Kings with six balls to spare.
And with that, Mumbai Indians' journey in IPL 2025 comes to an end. Despite fighting back time and again this season, they suffered heartbreak as they were knocked out of the tournament.
PBKS became the first team to chase down a 200-run target against the five-time champions. Shreyas Iyer, captain of PBKS, led from the front and took his side into the grand final. As he manifested, “The war is still on.”
