Former cricketer Yograj Singh revealed that the rare tense face of Yuvraj Singh appears only when his Punjabi boys, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, come out to bat.

Former Indian cricketer-turned-coach Yograj Singh was exclusively interviewed by Inside Sports. The conversation was casual, and he shared personal experiences about his son particularly Yuvraj’s post-retirement life along with some interesting insights.

Yograj Singh Reveals Yuvraj’s Tough Love for Shubman and Abhishek

Yograj highlighted Yuvraj’s tough love for Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, two players he personally trained:

“I have never seen Yuvraj Singh tensed, but whenever Shubman or Abhishek are playing, he seems tensed. He is always guiding them, especially Abhishek. Yuvraj grinds Abhishek more to keep him disciplined.”

Yograj also addressed one of the most asked questions on the internet: “Why has Yuvraj Singh never coached a team?” His answer was straightforward; it was purely Yuvraj’s personal decision. However, on a personal note, Yograj believes his son would make an excellent coach and has what it takes to build a strong team.

That is his personal decision (on why Yuvraj Singh is not coaching in the IPL). He’s big enough. He’s larger than life. I don’t have to ask him every time – Yuvi sir, how are you? That’s not the protocol he deserves. But I think he can be a great coach.

Yuvraj Singh Focused on Mentorship and Charity

Notably, Yuvraj was in contention to replace his friend Ashish Nehra as coach of the Gujarat Titans. However, the deal fell through, and Nehra was retained by the franchise.

Yuvraj Singh, widely regarded as India’s best white-ball player, announced his retirement in 2019. Since then, he has stayed away from formal coaching roles, instead working as a personal mentor to Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. He’s mostly been seen involved in charity work, playing in the Legends League, and occasionally appearing in the commentary box.

With his contemporaries like Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and MS Dhoni stepping into roles as coaches or mentors, Yuvraj’s absence from coaching continues to raise questions. Fans still hope the legendary all-rounder will eventually accept an opportunity to coach a team in the future.
