In a recent match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) spinner Suyash Sharma was seen using his cap to collect the ball, which led to a pause in play as the umpires deliberated on the situation.
This incident occurred during the 9th over of the match when Krunal Pandya was bowling to Riyan Parag. After the ball went to the cover fielder and no run was taken, it rolled towards Suyash Sharma, who was positioned behind the wicketkeeper. He picked up the ball using his cap, prompting a temporary halt in the game for the umpires to decide on the action.

According to the laws of cricket, the relevant rules state:
28.2.1.1 - If a player uses anything other than part of their person to field the ball, it is an offense.
28.2.1.2 - If a player extends their clothing with their hands to field the ball, it is also an offense.
28.2.1.3 - Discarding a piece of clothing, equipment, or any other object that subsequently makes contact with the ball is considered an offense.
In this case, Suyash Sharma technically committed the offense of using his clothing to gather the ball. However, since the square umpire declared the ball dead before Suyash picked it up with his cap, it was deemed that no offense occurred because the ball was no longer in play.
Nonetheless, the interruption disrupted the momentum of the Rajasthan Royals’ chase. Riyan Parag was dismissed immediately after play resumed, courtesy of a delivery from Krunal Pandya.
Rajasthan Royals face yet another loss
